Zimmerman Trial: Day One

Sanford, Fla. -- Day one in the jury selection for the trial of George Zimmerman and the number of jurors questioned so far can be counted on one hand.
The selection process will be a long one... it could take several weeks just to pick the jury.
This case has ignited discussion and debate over controversial and personal beliefs like race relations and gun control... meaning both sides have a lot at stake and must chose carefully moving forward.
Surveys and questions awaited 500 people summoned to the Seminole County Courthouse Monday.
The trial of George Zimmerman begins with individual sequester voir dire, questioning of potential jurors one at a time once they've completed a survey.
The process is more involved than your average jury selection because this isn't your average case.
"One potential benefit to that is we think that potential jurors might be more comfortable expressing view points strong emotions life experiences that they have that might somehow come in to play," University of Florida College of Law Professor Jennifer Zedalis says, "some people are inhibited speaking in a large group."
Individually, potential jurors are asked questions about their pre-trial knowledge... especially what they might have seen or heard in the media and what their reactions were to the news.
While the trial will take weeks... Zedalis says beginning with a wide jury pool is necessary in this case.
"A wide pool for this case because of the string emotions in the community the vast amount of media attention the case has gotten the fact that there are controversial issues in the case," she says.
As with any jury selection, the final six will be selected if they're agreed upon by both sides.
So it won't necessarily be who the prosecutor or defense picks... it's the people to whom they have the least objection.
