Homicide in Southwest Gainesville
What's drugs got to do with it? Could be everything, or nothing. Police are trying to figure out how a body ended up in a vacant apartment in Southwest Gainesville late last night. The circumstances surrounding the death of 26 year old Jeremy Meldau are still unknown.
Gainesville Police are investigating the death of Jeremy Scott Meldau after he was found just after 11 last night in the Phoenix Apartment Complex on Southwest 26th Terrace. Meldau served a prison sentence for drug trafficking and was released in 2008. Police haven't confirmed it, but neighbors told me he still might have been involved in dealing drugs, and that his death may have been a result.
The call came in at 11:15...police say Jeremy Scott Meldau had been seen alive just an hour or two earlier and had been in contact with a friend throughout the evening. Gainesville Police Department Detective Corporal Benjamin Smith said, "But somewhere during the night, late evening, the friend lost contact with him and they're very close friends and became concerned and went to that area."
Meldau's body was found late Tuesday night in this vacant apartment by his friend and co worker. The two men had apparently been doing construction work here earlier in the day. Police say the friend called 9-1-1 and a short time later, Meldau's death was confirmed. It appears from gunshot wounds to the head.
Another 9-1-1 call had come in around 8, from a neighbor who said they heard four gun shots. Smith said, "We don't know for sure that was related. Unfortunately it's not that uncommon for gun shots to be reported in some of those areas."
Neighbors I spoke with, who chose not to appear on camera, say they think Meldau was involved in drug dealing and that it was probably a drug deal gone bad. And investigators aren't ruling that out, but say it's too early to tell. Smith said, "It could have been a situation where he was there and something just went wrong, maybe an argument or something."
No gun has been found, and no suspect identified, but detectives say they have a few strong leads.
