Bomb Squad Called to Southwest Alachua County
Alachua County had a bomb scare Monday night after Marion County had a small explosion in a mailbox over the weekend..
The Alachua County Sheriffs office and the bomb squad got a call yesterday from residents about an explosion in a newspaper home delivery box near the corner of 75th Way and 105th Avenue.
After the explosion, the bomb squad found a suspicious package in the mailbox next to it. They investigated the package using a robot to see what was inside.
ASO Bomb Squad Lieutenant J.J. Moran said, "We notified all the residents, we evacuated the area, we stopped traffic, both pedestrian traffic and vehicle traffic and most of the time we remotely remove it or x-ray it."
Lieutenant Moran says they are still investigating the first explosion but it was more than likely an acid bomb or some sort of firework.
The second mysterious package turned out to be just a present for a neighbor.
The area was searched and cleared of any other bomb threats. They do not know yet if the explosion in Marion County, what Moran called a firework, is related to the Alachua County incident.
Gas Prices Climb
Theres no end in sight right now for gas prices, which continue to rise. AAA reports that's because prices of oil are at a nine month high.
They also report it's actually the improvement in the economy that is pushing prices up.
And these higher prices pose problems, specially for those who own businesses like landscaping and delivery services.
One business owner says he does not want to charge customers a surcharge for fuel, but if prices go up to $4 dollars in the spring like AAA predicts, then he may have to.
