The boy lives in the Silver Springs Shores area and was on probation for a previous burglary charge during the time he allegedly committed a long list of burglaries.
"It's kind of weird because we have lived here for so long and nothing like this has ever happened before," said John Peters.
In the past couple of days, burglaries have been on the rise in the Silver Springs Shores area.
Peters lives in this home on Southeast 88th lane.
On Monday morning he and his sister left their home and went to Tampa for a couple of hours.
"We came back the front door was open. It was unlocked and I know locked it before I left," said Peters.
To his surprise, someone broke in through the sliding door and ransacked the house.
"They end up going through all our drawers, kicking down our door. Laptops missing, my play station three," said Peters.
The burglar also broke into his car.
One street over on Southeast 88th Place another two cars were broken into and a house. The suspect entered that house through the sliding back door and left with personal items including a flat screen TV, a blu ray DVD player and some other electronics.
About 17 burglaries were reported in Silver Springs Shores between Friday July 5, 2013 and Wednesday July 10, 2013.
Turns out deputies say the burglar is a 14 -year- old boy.
Judge Cochran with the Marion County Sheriff's Office explained how deputies caught the teen.
"We were out there initially because of an attempted burglary and we had a general description of the suspect," said Cochran.
While deputies drove around the neighborhood, they spotted a boy who fit the description.
When trying to stop him, the 14- year- old rode away on his bike and then took off running.
"We were trying to arrest him. He resisted arrest with violence. He actually try to grab at one point the detectives gun and there was a struggle there," said Cochran.
During the scuffle the gun went off, but no one was hurt.
Residents in the Silver Springs Shores area said they're relieved someone was arrested, but shocked to hear it was a teen.
"What the heck your 14 years old. You have other things to do. It's summer time. Go out hang out with your friends and not be breaking into peoples homes," said Samantha Johnson.
The boy faces 17 counts of burglary as well as other charges for fighting with the the deputy and carrying a gun.
Cochran said deputies have recovered some of the property.
