Intoxicated Driver Crashes Into Family, Kills One
DIXIE COUNTY - A man who got kicked out of a Suwannee restaurant for being belligerent got behind the wheel while intoxicated and caused a crash that took the life of another man. The man that died was the husband of an employee from the restaurant he was just escorted out of. The worker and 5-month-old baby were also part of the wreck.
Makion Kirkland Jr. Was driving his truck while under the influence on County Road 349 in Suwannee. Kirkland crossed the center line and went against traffic, hitting a woman, Sesaley Bretz, and her husband, David Dewees Jr., who were traveling in different cars.
"If you're too drunk to drive take a cab, call a friend because this is really heart breaking," Dan Worley who witnessed the accident said.
Dewees had their 5 month old baby in the back seat he was driving alongside his wife who had just gotten off her shift as a server at this restaurant. He brought the baby to work and was following her back to the house. However one of them would never make it back home.
Dewees was killed on scene while his wife was airlifted to UF Health in critical condition. The baby was also transported to the hospital. A cook at Salt Creek Shellfish was also on his way home from work when he saw what happened, he stopped to help.
"I was able to remove the baby from the car seat and tried to calm it down some... Went and checked on the mother and she was in the other vehicle and she was struck there," Worley said.
While she'd only started working at Salt Creek Shellfish recently, the owners and workers here feel for family as her mother and sister also worked in the restaurant.
"It's always a personal choice. Either you want to take your own life in your hands but you have to think your also taking other peoples’ lives in your hands also," Worley added.
Kirkland has been arrested and is in the Dixie county jail for manslaughter, driving under the influence and leaving the scene of a crash. Something Worley, says he saw Kirkland attempting to do. "I know after I helped him off the hood... He went into the woods and it seemed like he was trying to hide," Worley said.
