Man Shot During Home Invasion
GAINESVILLE - Shots fired... a man down... and a police chase on the interstate.
A wild morning for Alachua County Sheriffs Deputies.
A man from Gainesville is hospitalized tonight after he was shot during a home invasion.
It was a wild morning for one Alachua County resident.
After he was shot, witnesses helped officers catch the suspects.
Some neighbors say they knew one of the victims personally…
"I don't know why no one would do this to him. He don't bother anyone…," said Vanessa Lamar, a resident at Linton Oaks.
Lamar lives a block away from Herman Brown.
Brown was shot in his home at Linton Oaks.
Lamar says he was a kind man.
"If you're in the store and you're short on money, he there, he just give it to you. He don't worry about you paying it back or nothing. That's just how sweet he is. So why someone would do this to him, I really don't know," said Lamar.
At around 9:00 a.m., Alachua County Sheriff's Office responded to a call from someone who witnessed a shooting.
Authorities say the witness followed the van the suspects were in and stayed on the phone with 911.
"This very alert saw it and followed them and updated us the whole way as to where they were, every turn that they made. And allowed us with the assistance of Gainesville Police to ultimately stop them and take them into custody without incident," said ASO's Public Information Officer, Ary Forgey.
The white van with four suspects was stopped here in Micanopy on 441 and County Road 234.
Ricardo Ducan, Marquis Corbitt, Monique Howard, and Alexis Dallas were taken into custody.
A friend of Brown's said she just saw him the night before and was surprised to hear what happened.
"You know you can't trust nobody. It's probably somebody he knew, probably. You know, just jealousy," said Markita Bowers.
Neighbors all agree that Brown was a friendly man who never caused any trouble.
"I just want him home safe and sound…," said Lamar.
Authorities say there was another victim, but have few details.
Brown's injuries are non-life threatening.
