Home Invasion Victim Speaks Out
OCALA- She said it's a miracle that she is alive. The woman who was attacked in her own home, but then fought off the man, is talking to us from her hospital bed.
Fifty- one-year- old Lonnie David Todd is a convicted sex offender who spent 20 years in prison for committing a crime in Alachua County. He was arrested for attacking Cordell on
Tuesday morning and was in court today. We spoke to the victim 65-year-old Connie Cordell on the phone on Thursday. She said she had open heart surgery, but is now doing well.
She also described what was running through her mind when her attacker tried raping and killing her.
"As I laid there I thought ok this is the time of decision. You either be raped and die or fight," said Cordell.
Sixty-five- year- old Cordell chose to fight when an intruder entered her home on Tuesday morning.
"I’ve never had a problem at that time in the morning in opening my door to let my kitty in. You don't think something like that is going to happen to you," said Cordell.
Detectives said this man Todd attempted to rob Cordell, but when she didn't give him money he tried raping her.
"He said get up and he held a knife to my throat and he led me into my bed room and pushed down onto my bed," said Cordell.
But Cordell fought back by kicking the intruder.
"He backed up enough that I got up off of the bed and I thought he punched me with his fist in the chest. I started screaming as loud as I have ever heard anybody scream," said Cordell.
Cordell said Todd panicked and then took off running.
While detectives were investigating, they showed Cordell pictures of several suspects. Cordell immediately recognized her attacker as Todd. Detectives first searched for Todd in the Fort McCoy area.
"There must have been 20 or 30 sheriff deputies out here. They had a helicopter in the air," said Ron Leatherberry who lives near Todd.
Todd was living at a home on Northeast 150th Lane in Fort McCoy. He lived there with his girlfriend Joyce Norman and Norman’s son Charlie Geer.
"He was wearing a camouflage jacket which cops later found in our truck when we gave them permission to search it and it had blood on it, where like he wiped his knife off,” said Geer.
Officers arrested Todd on Wednesday and Todd made his first appearance in court Thursday morning. He is charged with attempted felony murder, home invasion robbery with a deadly weapon, attempted sexual battery and failing to comply with sex offender requirements. He remains in the Marion County jail without bond. Cordell, neighbors and those close to Todd said they are relieved he is behind bars.
"He didn't need to be on the streets if he is capable of doing stuff like this," said Geer.
