While football is done for now, weekends can, at times, be very busy on the UF campus. The gymnastics, tennis, softball, track and field, lacrosse and golf teams are all out of town this weekend, but there's plenty of basketball to be had. The third ranked men's basketball team is home this weekend. The Gators, undefeated in SEC play this season, take on Alabama in the Odome at noon Saturday. The women's team, meanwhile, will be in action taking on the Kentucky Wildcats. Tip-off is noon Sunday in the O'Connell Center. Website
Santa Fe College's northwest Gainesville campus is host to the American Heroes Air Show this weekend. The event is described as "the nation's premier, helicopter-only, admission free community event." The event is held at a number of locations around the country. Saturday you'll get a chance to check out the helicopters used by the military, EMS, law enforcement and others. You can also talk with recruiting teams there about career opportunities. The air show runs from 9 am to 4 pm Saturday at Santa Fe College, 3000 NW 83rd Street in Gainesville. Website
Back indoors, the Ocala Civic Theatre's latest production hits the stage this weekend. The play "Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up" is a musical that revolves around the lives of eight kids growing up in 1950's Chicago...and the Catholic school they attend. This is the weekend for the 2014 Gainesville Heart Ball. The event is a fundraiser for the American Heart Association. The evening of fun will be a celebration of the work and mission of the organization, and the lives that have been saved thanks to research. The Heart Ball campaign raised almost 60 million dollars last year nationwide. The Gainesville Heart Ball is Saturday night from 6:30 to 11 pm at the UF Hilton Conference Center on SW 34th Street in Gainesville. Website
