Happy Friday everyone! All kinds of stuff to do around our area this weekend....
150 years ago Florida's largest Civil War battle was fought in our area. At the Olustee Battlefield Historic State Park, about 15 miles east of Lake City, you can see the annual reenactment of the Battle of Olustee this weekend. There'll be plenty going on at the park, where reenactors will give you a taste of what life was like during the 1860's. A demonstration battle takes place at 3:30 Saturday afternoon, while the full reenactment of the Battle of Olustee takes place Sunday at 1:30. Meanwhile, the Olustee Festival and Craft Show is also underway in downtown Lake City. The festival features food, entertainment, and lots for the kids to do. The festival runs from 9 am to 6 pm Saturday, with a parade at 10:30 Saturday morning. Website
Over on the Gulf coast, it will be a busy weekend in Steinhatchee. This is the weekend for the annual Steinhatchee Fiddler Crab Festival. The event, in its sixth year, will feature all kinds of musical entertainment. There'll also be a parade at 10 Saturday morning, in addition to food, arts and crafts and kids games. If you like racing, you can buy a crab and enter it in the fiddler crab races.... sounds like fun. The event runs through Sunday near the Steinhatchee Community Center. Website
In Gainesville, this is 5 Points of Life race weekend.... where you can run for a good cause. The goal of the 5 Points of Life Foundation is to educate and raise awareness for the five ways to help others through blood, blood products and organ donation. Saturday morning there's a 5 Points 5K starting at 8 am, with a kids marathon beginning at 9:15. There's also a fitness expo Saturday from 9 to 5. Starting at 7 Sunday morning, a marathon, half marathon and marathon relay are part of the activities. The start and finish lines are in the parking lot of the Phillips Center at UF. Website
Tonight the Gator baseball team kicks off it's 2014 season on the UF campus. They take on Maryland at 7 tonight in the first of a 3-game home stand. Website The number one gymnastics team is also in action at 7 pm, facing Arkansas at the Odome. Keep in mind that parking will be at a premium near the O'Connell Center tonight. Website
