Man Killed by Police on Butler Plaza
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- We turn now to the latest in a stabbing on the University of Florida Campus. Uniersity Police and Gainesville Police are wondering why 28- year- old Michael Cravey from Gainesville stabbed a man this morning.
Police say he didn't stop there...
Police say at around 7:00 a.m. the suspect came up to a University of Florida staffer and his wife in this parking lot.
After the two exchanged some words, the suspect stabbed the man and then drove away.
"I couldn't believe it, it was like on TV… you don't really think anything like that is gonna happen," said Gainesville resident, Bob Edens.
Cravey crashed his Jeep into another car at the intersection of Southwest 37th Boulevard and Archer Road.
Bob Edens of Gainesville says he felt a bit of panic while shopping at Butler Plaza.
"It was pretty scary," said Edens.
Police are still investigating the stabbing.
"We kept getting updates through the morning that the suspect was seen on the Archer Road area and we finally got some information that he was seen at this parking lot of the Best Buy and the PetSmart," said Gainesville Police Department's PIO, Ben Tobias.
Cravey ran from the crash into the Best Buy parking lot where he approached another car with a raised hatchet.
A GPD officer saw him and ordered him to stop.
"The GPD officer approached the suspect, drew his own firearm and asked him to drop the hatchet," said Tobias.
Cravey turned to the officer and charged at him.
The officer, who has not been identified, fired and hit Cravey several times.
The officer was not injured.
"The officer had no other option but to return fire to save his life and potentially any others that were in the area," Tobias added.
Tobias described the stabbing incident as a random event.
Police do not still have a motive.
"The suspect had already used force against another person and if he was allowed to escape who knows what else he may have done," said Tobias.
"He ran by me and I didn't know what to think then. I just heard a shot and I fell off the bike and waited…," said Edens
Michael Cravey died at uf health after multiple gunshot wounds.
Some witnesses say they heard between 6 to 8 shots being fired.
