It's Friday and that means the City of Gainesville's "Free Fridays" Concert Series continues tonight. June at the event has been a celebration of African-American Music Appreciation Month. That celebration wraps up with a tribute concert to the late Bo Diddley, the man the community plaza was named after five years ago. The tribute to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee will feature a number of his children, grand children and great grandchildren. The event kicks off at 8 pm this evening at... the Bo Diddley Community Plaza in downtown Gainesville. Website
If you're into comics and fantasy, Ocala may be the place for you. Ocala Comic Con is this weekend. It's the second year of the event that involves everything from comics to video games and beyond. There'll be artists, voice actors, a Pokemon tournament, a costume contest... and more. In fact, most of the people who go dress up in costume. If you're looking for something to buy, there'll be vendors there, too. Ocala Comic Con is from 10 to 6 Saturday, and 11 to 6 Sunday at the Ocala Hilton, 3600 Southwest 36th Avenue in Ocala. Website
People over on the Gulf coast are getting ready for scallop season, which opens Saturday and goes through September 24th. In Steinhatchee, they're celebrating the start of the season with Scallopalooza. The event will feature live music, food, and plenty of fun for the family. Scallopalooza starts at 4 pm Saturday next to Roy's in Steinhatchee. Website
Former Gator great and NFL veteran Mike Peterson will be hosting activities in the City of Alachua Saturday. It starts off with a youth football camp from 9 am to 1 pm at Mebane Middle School. The first 200 3rd through 8th graders registered can take part. From 1 to 5 pm everyone can head over to Alachua Downtown City Park for the Alachua Family Fun Day. If you bring a canned food item (for the local community center) you'll get a free desert. Website
