Wild Waters Re-Opens, Renovation Still Underway
OCALA - The waters are once again wild in Silver Springs. The fate of the once popular attraction has been in murky waters after an advisory group recommended that the park close. Wild waters is on its way to a full renovation. The park is open once again-- but not the entire park.
The Wave Pool, Cool Kids Cove, and Tad Pool are some of the things out here. If you're looking for something to do this summer with your family, then you'll be happy to know that wild waters is back up and running.
What almost became an abandoned water park is far from washing away now. "We just found out yesterday that they opened back up. Because we thought they were closing down for good,” April Jeffery an Ocala resident said.
For many months, the future of the park was not known, however some residents didn't lose hope. "Well it's a good clean safe place, close for us to come and enjoy the day when you know it's hot and the weather is good. It's just a lot of fun for the kids to come out,” Veeann Beasley a Dixie County resident said.
It's one of the few ways to keep kids busy during these hot summer months in North Central Florida. "There's not a lot to do in Ocala so we have to go to Orlando usually… so it's nice to be able to have something ten minutes away," Jeffery said.
Palace Entertainment use to operate wild waters, but the state took over in October of last year. A Silver Springs advisory group recommended the park be closed however the state was able to choose a concessionaire to give the park a make-over and operate it.
"If you talk to any of the hotels here, any of the merchandise store fronts along the east silver springs boulevard, they are thrilled that the park is opening back up. Because the more visitors and attendants we drive down this direction the more it supports the entire surrounding community."
Wild Waters is now being managed by Silver Springs Management LLC. Arden Tilghman the president and CEO, says they've worked hard to improve the face of the park. "It's a great way to come spend some time in the sun, cool off in the nice cool water and start to really experience what the new phase of this park is going to be," Tilghman said.
"I wanna go get on the slides when they get fixed," Argury Aparicio said. However so far only the rides for the younger kids are opened, however the big thrillers and those big rides for the older kids are expected to open July 24th.
"So phase two of our operation will be all of the slides and larger rides. We will have the silver river ride, silver bullet, alligator ambush and the hurricane… those are still undergoing repairs and renovations," Tilghman said.
