Happy Friday everyone! This weekend we have music.... and some events on the UF campus.
In Marion County, Downtown Summer Jams returns to Ocala tonight. This is the second weekend this summer for the event, now in its fourth year. The idea behind Summer Jams is to give local bands the chance to perform in a bigger setting. The theme tonight is pop and r&b with several bands performing on stage. Also at the event: a car show and a variety of food truck vendors just in case you're hungry. Summer Jams runs from 6 to 10 tonight at Citizens' Circle in downtown Ocala. Website
If you love music, and it's reggae you're looking for, head to downtown Gainesville. Tonight's "Free Fridays" Concert Series features the The Irie Ones (formerly known as Iration). The band's been playing reggae music since the 1990's. Tonight they'll be performing original songs.... and some songs you may remember from reggae pioneers Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff. The show goes from 8 to 10 tonight at the Bo Diddley Community Plaza. The concert series, by the way, is every Friday night through October. Website
Also in Gainesville this weekend.... Florida Football and Volleyball Fan Day on the UF campus. While they're not playing you get a chance to meet the players and coaches of both teams. The UAA will supply the 2014 Gator football and volleyball posters for autographs (no outside items are allowed, by the way). The event runs from 3 to 6 pm Saturday at the O'Connell Center (gates open at 2:30). The volleyball team will have their Orange & Blue scrimmage at 3:30 pm. Website
Also on campus, the University of Florida is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Panama Canal. The Panama Canal Centennial Celebration (Website) is a weekend of activities including a chamber orchestra performance tonight at the Phillips Center and a special exhibit at the Harn Museum of Art. Saturday from 10 to 3, the Florida Museum of Natural History is having Panama Canal Zone Day as well. Website
Enjoy your weekend!
