"Celebration Pointe Bridge" opening to connect Archer Rd and Butler Plaza
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Since 2015, a project has been underway to relieve traffic from Archer Road. Along with the new Butler Plaza developments, "Celebration Pointe Bridge" is bringing in more commercial retail to Gainesville. Project leaders will celebrate the opening of the I-75 overpass Saturday and Sunday.
"This will be a center and hub for Gainesville for entertainment and restaurants," said the Project Asset Manager, Sean McIntosh.
Construction on the celebration pointe bridge is almost finished... creating a brand new route between the west side of archer road and the new butler plaza development.
McIntosh said, "The bridge is an overpass on I-75 and will allow for another route to relieve some traffic, much needed relief, on Archer Road."
The commercial development cost about $200 million.
McIntosh said it will include retail, office, and residential business, anchored by Bass Pro Shops as well as an upcoming Regal theater.
This weekend, project leaders will celebrate the bridge's grand opening by helping people in need.
Amber Miller, with the Child Advocacy Center, said, "The celebration Pointe Bridge Walk and Fall Festival is just a great event, a free event for the community that's benefiting the Child Advocacy Center."
AFor 15 dollars, people will be able to walk across the bridge before it opens to traffic. All the money will help abused and neglected kids in Alachua County.
"They wanted to find an organization in the community to give back to so we were very fortunate enough that they decided to partner with us," Miller said.
A bus lane for RTS is on the bridge, and transportation officials said buses will begin running on the bridge in the Spring.
The event is on Saturday, and includes a free festival.
Miller said, "We're going to have some food trucks, there will be a DJ, we'll also have a booth where the kids can come and do a child-friendly activity."
"It'll be a fun and family oriented event," said McIntosh.
The event begins at 10 am on Saturday. The bridge will be open for traffic on Sunday.
Bass Pro Shops has a grand opening on Wednesday, while other retail shops and restaurant will be opening within the next year.
