Bugs Used To Color Food Products
Have you ever wondered how the delicious foods you eat get their color? If not, maybe it's time you did.
Concerns are on the rise on how some popular food and beverage companies color their products.
Dannon, a company highly praised for the taste and health benefits from their products are now under fire.
A non-profit consumer investigator says that they use large amounts of carmine bugs to give specifically their strawberry flavored yogurt it's color. They do this by crushing them together, and in seconds the remains turns into a beautiful red dye.
Other companies such as Starbucks admitted to using carmine to give color to their products, like the strawberry and cream frappuccino. Last year Starbucks said they'd stop using the dye.
According to the FDA, using carmine is safe and approved, but that isn't stopping The Center For Science In The Public Interest from trying to urge companies to get the bugs out of their product.
Michael Jacobson, member of the advocate center says, " A company like Dannon should be coloring its strawberry yogurt with strawberries and not some insect extract".
The group also mentions that consumers have complained that the bug coloring has caused vomiting, hives, and swelling.
Dannon says if consumers want to avoid it, they can just look at the label, and it will say "Carmine".
