Nine Gators Voted to 2013 Preseason Media Days All-SEC Team
Birmingham, Ala.-Nine University of Football players were named to the 2013 Preseason All-SEC Teams, as voted on by a record 243 media members at SEC Media Days this year. Defensive lineman Dominique Easley, defensive back Loucheiz Purifoy and punter Kyle Christy were named to the preseason All-SEC first team. In addition, the Gators were voted to finish third in the SEC Eastern Division.
Easley, a senior from Staten Island, N.Y., has played in 29 games with 23 starts in his career. He has totaled 67 tackles, 16 tackles-for-loss and 5.5 sacks in his three seasons in Gainesville. Last season, he led UF with four sacks. He has been named to watch lists for the Rotary Lombardi Award, Chuck Bednarik Award, Bronko Nagurski Trophy and Outland Trophy.
Purifoy, a junior from Pensacola, Fla., has made 26 appearances for the Gators with 12 starts at cornerback and one start at wide receiver. He is the team's leading returning tackler after racking up 51 tackles last year, while also forcing three fumbles and breaking up five passes. He has been named to the preseason watch lists for the Chuck Bednarik Award and Bronko Nagurski Trophy.
Christy, a junior from Brownsburg, Ind., is ranked second in school history, averaging 44.3 yards per punt. He set a school record for single-game punt average against South Carolina in 2012 with a 54.3 average. Christy also set a school record in 2012 with a season average of 45.8 yards per punt. He was a finalist for the 2012 Ray Guy Award and is on the preseason watch list for the award entering 2013.
Offensive lineman Jon Halapio and defensive back Marcus Roberson were both second team selections. Halapio, a fifth-year senior from St. Petersburg, Fla., enters 2013 with a team-leading 33 career starts. Roberson, a junior from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., led the team in 2012 with 12 pass breakups and had two interceptions.
Five Gators were selected to the third team, including running back Matt Jones, center Jonotthan Harrison, linebacker Ronald Powell and return specialist Andre Debose. In addition, Purifoy was selected as the third team all-purpose player, as he will likely play a factor on offense and special teams as well as defense this season.
Jones, a sophomore from Seffner, Fla., locked down the starting job in the spring after coming on late last season in a backup role and totaling 275 rushing yards with three touchdowns. Harrison, a fifth-year senior from Groveland, Fla., has appeared in 39 games with 27 starts in his career and is on the preseason watch list for the Rimington Trophy Award.
Powell, a redshirt junior from Moreno Valley, Calif., missed all of 2012 after suffering a torn ACL in the spring game. He led the team in sacks as a sophomore with six. Debose, a fifth-year senior from Sanford, Fla., currently holds the UF record and is tied for the SEC record with four career kickoff return touchdowns. He has averaged 27.4 yards per kick return, also a school record.
