Gaming inspires local advertiser
Whether you're a fan of desktop gaming or you long for the days of 2-player consoles, you've probably been a fan of a popular video game at some point.
But one business right here in Gainesville has taken their creativity and experience to a professional level.
"I remember at one point i was playing age of empires too much at one point and my mom took the cd and smashed it with a hammer…"
Gerry Wathen is a gamer. Today his business is a product of that obsession.
"…2010 is when the organization initially started and it started with the $500 grant i got to buy my first computer", says Wathen, CEO of TheButtonMasherz.
TheButtonMasherz started out creating videos on YouTube for video games, right here at Santa Fe College’s downtown campus.
“TheButtonMasherz started with the idea to become a multi-channel network from the beginning and it was actually started here in this building the Center for Innovation and Economic Development. One of the reasons why the company wanted to become a multi-channel network back when it was an organization, before it was a business, is because we wanted to help "YouTubers" and provide creative freedom and independence for them”, says Wathen.
With the popular multiplayer online battle arena game "League of Legends" for inspiration, Wathen was a part of the movement that made using video game footage and concepts for entertainment-- and for profit-- possible without infringing on the rights of intellectual property.
"League of Legends " became number one in the world. It was, near its peak, over 40 million players worldwide and some other companies followed suit because Google and YouTube saw the success of that said 'ok, this is a thing'. And it started a domino effect and eventually most of the video game entertainment industry went along with it and now everyone's benefiting from it”, he says.
Now this local startup is using their creative talents and trail blazing in the advertising world.
Wathen says, “Gainesville's been on the map in the tech industry for quite some time and i believe because of all the talent just waiting to be discovered and pushed and utilized that Gainesville is growing and I believe that if we all work together and promote our community, we can achieve a lot more and I’m here to help people".
Wathen says TheButtonMasherz is offering a 30% discount to local businesses. To learn more visit their website.
